Really depends on your taste. I'm happy with a tank of just Orangeheads, or Altifrons or Satanoperca, but my joy of fish keeping is successfully breeding them and raising out the fry.

I usually tend to not shy away from eartheaters too often other than the occassional peaceful oddball fish.

Maybe some rarities like Geo Argyrostrictus, Retroculus, even some Biotodoma or Guianacara. Youtube and google till your hearts content, something might spark your interest.;)

Be careful with Guianacara. I had a group of G. caroni and they picked on OHs. Then they started breeding like rabbits, then they started picking on each other....off to Ken's they went :(

The only Guianacara I have seen locally was a single Guianacara Geayi. Beautiful fish. They moved it to a display tank. "not for sale" after a couple weeks.

I have been looking at Crenicichla Notophthalmus (Dwarf Pike). I can get my hands on these in a couple weeks and so far seem like they would fit well. Still doing some homework though.

That's where I'm going. I've seen these in person at the store and stook in front of the tank for about 20 minutes.

I'm probably going to throw in a few Sterbae Corydora as well. I know not monster but I miss having them. Lots of personality.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Sorry for the late reply, was out of the country for a bit. I probably wouldn't mix any of the spotted Satanoperca with the nonspotted, or the nonspotted with Geophagus. Like Titansfever, I prefer one decent sized group left to their own devices, with perhaps only dwarf cichlids.

I've had the dwarf pikes and would deffinately recommend the noto's if you go the daemon route, they are found in nature together in the Rio Negro (though the current daemon are from colombia instead). The noto's will leave the geo's alone, but can be rough with each other at times. Luckily it's easy to see the male/female differances.

You went down to Portland to visit the store? Nice, I am jealous!!

Thanks DP!!! Yeah I go to the store about once a week. I can't help it... I won't be getting the Daemon now. Sad though because they have juvies foir $12 and adults about 4"-5"+ for $50. I will be getting the dwarf pike, probably just a pair. I already have the S. Mapiritensis and just picked up juvie Red Heads the other day. I am pretty sure they will bully less than the Abalios does. [crosses fingers]

On a side note, I am growing out a pothos plant right now to have the roots all over inside the tank. I bought the plant for my dad at 4 years old 24 years ago and he gave me a cutting for my tank. I'm doing manzanita branches that I get to hand pick/cut mine from my dads property and treat it myself. :grinno: My dad unfortunatly has a terminal illness and we have been getting really close because of my tanks and his pond. You guys are going to LOVE what I do with this tank. He and I have been planning together for a while. Keep an eye on my sig...!

You must be down south then, Vancouver? I'd love to be able to visit there that often ... hard to justify 3+ hour one way drives now a days though.

Post pics of the noto's when you get them. They have sold both true noto's (males have dorsal extensions like a ram or cac apisto) and cf. noto's lately that lack the male extensions. Either fish is awesome and worth it though.

Vancouver. Bro, any time you ever want to come down, you can stay at my place so it's not a long day/drive, no worries. The wife is cool and won't mind. I know a few MFK'er locally that would come over for sure. Group raid on PDX LFS's! :headbang2

I'll grab some pics in a bit of the pothos and mangroves so you can see what I was talking about with "the root tank".

Sneak peak on my design ideas for you guys. The pikes are going to love the roots. Like I said above the tank will be all sand, manzanita branches, a pothos growing with it's roots hanging in the tank and I am going to try and figure out how to get my mangroves in there as well. Open to suggestions though.

Growing from a single leaf cutting. Plant will be on top of the tank, roots submerged. I ring out my filters in this water.

My mangroves. Been in FW for long time now and doing great. I ring out my filters in the water as well They are actually starting to branch. I feed nothing but fish waste. Same for the pothos.

This is NOT mine but gives you an idea of what the pothos will do. I obviously will trim mine but better than this but I think it's awesome. WIll give the pikes an red head fry a place to hide.
