here's another little update. I decided to change the bottom rock on the left side rocky outcrop, here is the bottom of it, plenty of area to silicon it to the base of the tank

if you look closely in this photo you'll see two holes which were drilled to suit the sump tank return water hoses

here you see the holes in the right side wall for the two Eheim Pro 3 (2080) filter returns and also the lower cut out which feeds water to the suction pipes of one of the Eheim pumps
the other Eheim filter suction pipes are fed from the left side corner
I'm warming to the idea of live plants, i'll need to do some research into what's available and what they require to thrive before investing in anything. They'd definitely brighten up the aquarium and be a nice contrast with the rocks.
here's how it's looking at the moment, just need to do rocks over the front of the weir box and in the top right corner, then it's ready for grout, paint, sealer.
