150gal - time for a makeover... DIY weir, sump, background

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi..Love your thread...Great post....Very nice work. I too have a 125 gallon tank..Old Petco model. As soon as I finish my first build (currently doing a 90 gallon) I am going to sorta "re-do" if you will, the tank. I currently house some Central and South American cichlids. Convicts, silver dollars, a Jag, a Texas, pictus cat, a pleco, a jewel, a jack dempsey, and recently purchased a small RTC, which I KNOW I'm gonna have to build another tank for !! They get huge of course. Anyway, I am inspired about your DIY background. I have been afraid to tackle that. But with your idea of doing a model first, I think I can try it. A few questions. Where did you get your material (poly stuff or styrofoam??)? And what do you cut it with?

And by the way..This is my tank as of a few weeks ago. I plan to drill the back, build a new stand, so that I can house a sump underneath as well. IMG_2121.JPG

Your tank looks amazing! Thanks for posting this. It was cool seeing how everything came together and it's inspired me to try something similar. Also your son and dog are both adorable!

I found a packaging company close to where I live in the UK, they sell the blocks in a big cube bundle. It cut easily with a craft knife (razor blade), it makes a fair mess though!

I'm currently dealing with an algae bloom, it's beginning to come under control now but still looks a bit ugly.

The sump is done, I did have chaeto in the right side of the sump but it died off, not sure why, it was tumbling nicely, maybe the light wasn't adequate?

Phosphate originally measured 1ppm

but since running some RowaPhos in a bag in the sump it now looks to have gone

Nitrates are fine

and one last photo of one light on blue and the other blue and white
