i always wondered how you keep the plants and substrate in the same place during water change. Do you only drain and replace or remove any waste along the bottom?

Thanks...I put a vivasun pump in the tank and just drain and replace. I have not vacuumed at all which I'm sure I'll need to figure something out. I'm planning on adding more pothos or other house plants.

You can gravel vac the surface layer around plants. I do vac areas without plants but there's still a chance of damaging roots. As others have said though it's usually just a 10-90% drain and fill.
