So I stumbled across a 240 gallon red sea reefer 900xxl on marketplace for a song and a dance. The only problem? The rear seam is pulling apart for about the first 4". I have resealed many tanks before. The largest being a 75 gallon. I just have a few concerns.
1- Moving such a big tank. I have the harbor freight suction cups, the issue is they are only rated to 150 pounds. Which doesn't seem like enough to lift such a large tank. Should I risk using them?
2- I have no idea what I am doing for a rimless reseal. I have only resealed rimmed tanks where I can mess up the bead a bit and nobody will notice. Ive read through a few threads on here and watched some videos. But there seems to not be a lot of info on doing a tank this big.
3- These tanks are notorious for leaking at the seams. Im going to be using the ASI black silicone as it has the highest tensile strength of the silicones I looked at. Should I consider adding bracing? Either euro bracing or an additional piece of glass on the bottom?

Thanks for the help, hopefully I am able to get this bad boy up and running soon

Did you get the tank?

Those HF suction cups are actually a lot tougher than they look. I use them, but I wouldn’t trust them to move a large tank. I would however trust them to lift a tank high enough to get it on to some furniture dolly’s.

What are the dimensions and glass thickness of the tank. That will answer your bracing question and more than likely tell you why it keeps blowing out seams..

Yep. Got the tank. I actually broke down the panels on site and moved them one by one to the truck. So we were able to move the whole tank, stand, and sump with just 2 guys.

The dimensions are 79” x 25.5” x 25.5”, 3/4” glass all the way around. The tank appears to have failed due to the original owner not using leveling feet in the stand and the shoddy silicone Red Sea originally used on this gen tanks. The silicone peeled right off the glass, so I’m hoping the leveling feet plus the ASI silicone will prevent me from needing any bracing.

Well there you go then. At that height and glass thickness I don’t think bracing is entirely necessary. Especially if the silicon is suspect. I only ask because I just went through hell with a 170g that’s 30 inches tall and only 1/2 glass. Ended up doing a full euro brace. At 3/4 you should be more than fine.

I am SO GLAD I chose to use leveling feet when I built my stand absolutely worth the extra pennies and time. I bought some off amazon for leveling heavy machinery.
