Stand looks great, how come you're not putting ply on the top?

And for the lighting, if you want the shimmer and shadow effect of a halide then have a look at LED floodlights, I'm sure there will be someone selling them in Oz. You could probably get similar or more light from a couple of 10W or a single 30W LED flood and use about 1/5th the power, and still get the shimmer effect.

The tank will be glass. Plan on using foam underneath. Thanks for the tip on the lights. I'll look into them

Quick update. Finally got around to building the hood. It's not quite finished but wanted to get a feel for how it looks. It's a bit off in parts, maybe being hungover didn't help, but overall I'm happy with it. Need to find some small door handles and do some touch ups. Probably another coat of paint too.

Thanks. The tank is from Abyss aquariums. It's well made and really does display well. Hands down the best aquarium I've ever had. I wouldn't recommend their customer service though.
