Hey I am building a tank like almost exactly like yours because you had a pretty good design. When you fill fill it with water for the first time DON'T PUT IT INSIDE YOUR HOUSE. It might burst!. It most likely won't but with homemade tanks you never know. I was just wondering what you used to coat it with. I need to know all the layers please. Thanks in advance. You have the best design i have ever seen and it looks the coolest.
Uhm... I did fill it inside my house the first time I filled it... Lucky for every one it didn't BURST! I recon the secret is to let everything cure 100% before filling the tank. Silicone can take weeks to fully cure, even if the bottle says 24 hours.

As for the coating of the tank;
1 layer Polyester resin
1 layer Polyester resin + chop strand mat (fiberglass)(chop strand overlapped on all seems, thus making all seems double fiberglass layers)
1 layer Polyester resin for good measure
4 layers epoxy all over. Additional layers on the bottom and seems. (I had some left over)

as for what type of epoxy:
The epoxy is a 2 part, food grade, ceramic coating epoxy. I got it at a place called FlowCrete in Johannesburg South Africa. To quote the guys there when I asked how long it would last in this application "Many, many years sir. Many years." It set me back SAR500 for 6 liters of the stuff (+-$70 for 1.5 Gallons). Applying it in winter time is a bit tricky, because it goes tacky as hell if the room temperature is less than 20 degrees (68 Fahrenheit), so I had to use all the heat generating appliances I own to heat the room to 20 when I was working with it. Plus, it didn't cure in 10 hours... It took 2 days to cure per coat (there are 4 coats on there!).

Thanx for the kind words kid.

This thing is going to look GREAT! I might have missed this, But what are you planning on stocking?

(not expecting you do this) I have always wanted to see a big tank over stocked with male show guppies. It would be mad!

what size glass thickness do you suggest for a 120 gallon practice tank
Well that would depend on the dimensions of the tank.

Uhm... No.
hehe, that would be mad!

Well the stock list includes the following so far;
1 x Aro
1 x CK
1 x Oscar
2 x Plecs
1 x Lima (which I'm still trying to find in my LFSs)
And I'm still deciding on whether or not I'll put my 4 Bala's in there as well or rather go for a big cichlid of some sort.

Thought I would do a quick update on this thread.
Here is how the tank looks at the moment. The second background is in and repaired. I'm planning on curing the backgrounds for 2 weeks before I'll attempt putting in any fish.

This is a pic of a 300gph pump behind one of the backgrounds.

The pump feeds these undergravel jets.

So I can stuff the back of the backgrounds with filter material and thus have my backgrounds function as filters :)

One question...

Is there any danger of nitrate build ups with filter material behind the backgrounds? Just being directly in the tank and all, does that make it more of a potential problem?
