40 Hex= Worth a try?

OK guys/gals, thanks again for the advice. Going to go with apistogramma.

I really liked Julies and the Ruby Greens but she didn't go for it...so I found Apistogramma cacatuoides double reds on aquabid last night and grabbed a group of 5. Hopefully they'll do well in there for us, as I am a litte more familiar with them as far as research and reading up on their reqt's

I have the tank running now, and will seed it from my 90 gallon as it has the same pH I need 6.5-7.5. Will be adding pool sand as substrate mixed with some broken pcs of marble shale (or whatever its called), then I'm going to stack 4-5 small pcs of bog wood and add 2 amazon sword. I figure the swords should fill the tank pretty close to the top, and will provide more cover.

Do you think bosemani rainbows will be ok to fill out the top of the tank or should I go with something like Tiger barbs that may be a little more hardy? I've kept both and really like the rainbows. Was thinking a group of 7-8 of either would work pretty well

Thanks again!!:headbang2

Don't know if the foot print suits the Rainbows. If it works, I would do them, one of my fav. dither. The Tiger barbs are actice and good choice also.

I suppose rainbows could work because they could kinda swim in circles around the edge of the tank, but overall, I would say they are definitely not my first choice(for space reasons, not beauty... they are certainly a great display fish). If you want rainbows, go with a group of celebese or threadfins... they're real small, and they're great-lookin too... particularly the celebese, IMO. Probably wouldn't be bothered by the apistos, either.

Thanks I was looking at the Julies as they seem to be a popular choice. But I also came across a "cookie cutter" set-up for a 29 gallon that mentioned:

Haplochromis "Ruby Green"
it is a striking fish and may be another possibility. I have never heard of or seem them for sale online though. Are they a popular fish?

i say go for the ruby greens! step out of the norm and do something different!
