Did the UV increase the water temp beyond the set heater temp? If so, why did you have to adjust the heater down 2*? just curious, thanks.

Well the heater is in the sump and the water cools down a lot during its fall from tank to sump but the uv is after the sump so say the tank is 80.5 but when it gets to the sump it drops to 77 so if I set my heater to 80.5 it would constantly be on sending hot water up to the tank and make my tank close to 83 and now that the uv is hooked up after the sump it heats the water just a Lil bit more after the heater so I compensated by dropping the temp just a Lil more til I got the 80.5 I aim for.

*so I set my heater to 79 before the uv was installed to get 80.5 and after the uv was installed I dropped it to 77 to get it to 80.5

I have a jebao 55 watt that I am going to install on my pond and run it at 3500 GPH. I know someone who ran one of these at 5500 GPH for years and it still worked at killing algae. A 55 watt UV at your flow rate is too much IMO.

Killing algae only requires 20mJ/cm^2. I run my 40W for three years on my mahseer pond without changing the bulb for algae control. Most UV on aquariums are targeting pathogens and not so much for algae. Aquariums require a higher dosage. Aquarium keepers must be careful with the flow and capability posted on the box. Many are quoting for pond use and dosage is low.

Thanks for the clarification. I have two 24w green killing machine running in the sump which really helped with water clarity- especially in the early days when the tank was still cycling. I run the same thermometer in the sump and one in the internal overflow and the temp is never more than 1* greater. I'd often thought it was just hotter underneath the stand, but will do some testing just to see. I also dont run 24/7.
