Prheeflow,

I’ve been reading some older threads on Safe and how Seachem kept the product composition the same yet changed the label to a dose that reduced chloramines by a factor of 50% in an effort to simply dosing instructions. Reading that makes me very upset. My Safe label states to use a 1/4 tsp to treat 300 gallons for chloramine. I dosed the 630g based on the instructions at a bit over 1/2 tsp. The older instructions called for 1 tsp for 200 gallons. This was on a tank with all new water. Meaning, if the Safe formula remains unchanged, I should have or could have dosed 3 tsp. That’s a huge difference and I would have prefered to dose a bit higher for all new water and still be within “safe” recommended dosing range. My local water report reports our chlorine level at 1.6 ppm. Could this be the reason I lost my entire tank of fish?

Hmmm...that’s good info and it kind of upsets me to read that as well. Sorry about your fish man. I’ve kept fish for 3 decades and never had issues after a water change. In fact, the only issues were when I first started out fish keeping and didn’t do enough of them. Now that I switched to Safe, I’ve lost over 22 fish in short order...17 in one shot this last time.

I also double dosed Safe per instructions just to be cautious. Shortly after the water change my plecos we’re going nuts, panting with cherry red gills, and banging themselves all over the place and eventually flipped over. Mind you, this was my backup colony of L134 and L46 plecos, some nice angels from Steve Rybicki, and some rarer cories. Pricey losses and fish I raised out for a long time.

I talked to an Marine and fish biology professor this weekend and he says it’s likely chlorine exposure. He said, the cities sometimes dose heavy at different times of the year. That makes sense but why have I never had these issues before when I did water changes? Safe was a great, cost effective option but I’m going back to Prime. I don’t pretend to know exactly what happened but can only share my personal experience. I’m just not using Safe anymore...can’t trust it. The first time could have been an odd occurrence but this second experience, which went down the same way, seals the deal for me.

I previously used Prime on my smaller tanks and have done water changes weekly for the past 3 years with no problems. I switched to Safe after getting the 150g due to the larger tank volume and experienced no problems with weekly water changes and 1/8 tsp dosing for the same fish. I also mix the Safe with tank water prior to adding and dose for the total volume of the tank. I've emailed Seachem and hope to hear back although I'd assume there are too many variables for any meaningful insight. Some of my fish exhibited the same symptoms prior to their demise. Wow, I lost exactly 17 fish as well. I think I'll switch back to Prime just in case.

Wow that is an odd coincidence and horrible that we both lost 17 fish in the same manner, using the same product. I hope Seachem will enlighten both of us if we did something incorrectly. But I agree it’ll likely be inconclusive. Maybe the professor was right and the water company added something to the tap?? Regardless, I’m going back to Prime for now as I’ve had no issues with it. Good thing I only use RO with my breeding tanks. Would’ve been devastated to lose any of my breeding colonies. I would use RO for all my tanks if possible but there’s no way I can make enough water. Keep me updated and you’re tank is looking awesome.
