10' in length would require a joint in the ply on the back, bottom and front.. Most sheets are only 8' long. Hence the need for external bracing. By staying within the sheets size, I eliminate these joins and a potential weak point. The largest sheet I can find here is 9' x 4'. I guess to answer your question, sheet size is the determining factor for size.
aight thanx! that answers my question. around here, i can get 10' x 5' ply. only 3/4 " but 21 compressed layers so almost as solid as oak. 149$ a sheet though

I can't believe how cheap you got that ply!! I pay that much for a sheet that's half as thick!

The tank is looking fantastic. Can't wait to see it done!

First of all, I just want to say thanks for all the great comments!
I finally have all the coats on this puppy. I ended up buying another 6L kit of epoxy so it is well and truly sealed. It has now been fiberglassed first followed by 2 coats of epoxy with a good sanding in between. Sanded again and another 3 coats which were applied in succession before the previous coat was cured.

Pics here are with the flash not long after the final coat.

This is the spot it will be going. I will raise it onto the blocks once the glass is in which probably won't be for a few weeks due to prior commitments.

Found my first piece of wood for this tank today. What do you think of this for a center piece? I had to get wet for this one:D

I will cut the upright piece so it wedges under the cross support. And yes, it fits through the top openings. Just:grinno:

haha! That really puts the size of your tank into perspective, when I first saw the wood, I figured it would lay down across the tank. But it takes up a fraction of the space...

Good work my friend, I really wish I lived near you so I could check that out in person! Keep it up ;)
