800g ply catfish growout tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm in the same situation, being in phx. Our pool is 15,000g gets direct sunlight all day in the summer and gets to around 90+ degrees in the summer.

I've talked to others that have done ponds here, and they recommend going at least 3' deep, adding shade, and good water movement...and so far they've all had good luck.

My concern is heating it in the winter. Even though we have mild winters, the water still will get cold.

I need to start digging soon. My RTC has put on about 3" in the first month I've had him. My TSN is around 15-18" and I just added a niger cat to the mix.

for you guys in az and nv shade would seem to be a must and you guys should definitly take advantage of the solar in the winter months I am going to try it even of it cost more than it saves I would rather spend the money on somthing I can build than send it to the power company and if it works out I can apply it to my next tank. I am anticipating heating being my number one cost so the better this works the bigger I will build my next tank even if I have to cover my whole darn roof with ugly solar heaters

Yeah, the heater for our pool was expensive. And then it costs about $300 to heat the pool for the weekend. We never use it. We're now considering doing solar heat...if we go that route, I'll probably have something ran right to the pond. I plan on insulating the pond as well, even when its in the ground. Not sure if that'll make a difference, but figured the insulation would at least offer some padding if the fish freak and bang into the wall.

A black hose on top of the patio roof will provided plenty of heat. I have a buddy that heats his pool in the summer (St.Louis) by running a black garden hose down his driveway and back to the pool. A small Rio pump is all that is used and he has great results. I think a smaller pump will get the hose filled and heat better w/less flow.

Thats not a bad idea at all.

i am gonna follow this and im glad u are gonna make a bigger enclosure for ur rtc ii have seen so many people not take care of there cat and alot of pet stores sell them sick and with gill curl

Your sulcata tortoise has moderate pyramiding, I suggest to cut down on "junk" food and have him concentrate on grass. But that's the problem with free roamers, they keep eating unhealthy stuff.

yeah thats how he was when I rescued him grass is his main diet now with some special treats of dandilion, romaine, mustard greens, collard greens etc about once a week or so. I spent $2300 dollers on grass and sprinkler system at my new house for him to be able to graze on. I figured it would be better to give a good home to a needy tortoise than to raise a hatchling he is doing great now. I guess he was about 7-8 yrs old when I got him for a xmas gift last year for my daughters. and I assure you he is in good hand and getting proper care and thank u for your concern as sulcatas seem to be the rtc of the tortiose world. many by them cheap and small not realizing they will turn into a 150 pound beast that will demand a whole backyard.
