African Clawed Frog with discus?

Hey guys it’s me again, I have a 90 gallon set up as most of you know with my discus collection. Built in sump filtration, I’ve included pics of the setup.. Do you guys feel like it would be safe and comfortable for the animals to add two small albino African clawed frogs? My ph is 7.8 and the temp is 86f will this be ok with everyone? How do they do in community aquariums? ‍

I feed twice daily blood worms in the am, flakes at noon and live black worms in the evening. Do they require any special requirements?

Opinions please? The reason I didn’t post this in the discus section is because I’m curious to how these pets relate with our aquarium fish in genera..

Clawed frogs are vicious predators that would pose a threat to your smaller fish. I am not sure if they could handle discus temperatures.

I am not sure if the frogs themselves would be ok at those temperatures or not, someone more experienced with them could answer that. They will eat your smaller fish at some point, depending on their size that could be right away or once they get bigger. Once the frogs are full grown the discus would be the only fish that would be completely safe. You could pick up a ten gallon kit and put them in that if you wanted.

Personally I would have done more research before ordering them -- but why not just ask your friend, or is he/she not keeping them with fish?

Besides possibility of violence/death, plus water temperature issues, I'd hope that the frogs weren't carrying any diseases that could possibly wipe out your discus.

Btw, as a side note you do realize that posting (the same) 10-15 reasonably high rez pix, esp. when they're the same fish but from just somewhat different angles, on multiple threads is rather a waste of the site's server space (and use scrolling effort), don't you?

I dont think those frogs will handle those temps very well, and they will definitely eat your betta and the tetras. Loaches might be ok.

Another thing to consider is that betta will not survive for long in temperatures higher than 84 long term. Same with the cardinal tetras. I could be wrong but I think the recommended temp range for them is 76-82.

i often see them kept together.. that’s the only reason I assumed it was cool. I have other places to put them if they cannot tolerate temps of 84-86. I’m not careless. The betta has been appearing to be doing fantastic for the past month and I could be wrong but I’ve seen tetras in temps of over 90 and doing just fine. Tetras are the most common discus tankmate.

So the frog won’t be ok at 84?

You really do have lovely discus.

However, I wouldn’t be too concerned about whether those frogs could withstand your tanks temp. (Only because if that was my tank I’d be focusing on the discus) I’d be much more worried about what those frogs would introduce into that tank. You’ve mentioned a few times how lucky you’ve been and how easy you think discus are to keep....for the most part they are, but seriously, quit while your ahead!!!!

Quit thinking about putting frogs, betas, glass pyramids, ect in that tank and relax and enjoy your lovely discus!!!!

In all seriousness though, African Claw frogs are preditors. Once they have taken care of your smaller fish I wouldn’t be surprised if they bothered your discus. Might not out right kill them but they will not be happy tank mates. Your discus will not be happy with those frogs as tank mates.

Also you’ve mentioned multiple times you hope your discus pair up. If they should and start laying eggs in that tank those frogs will take care of the eggs in short order.

To be fair to the frogs (because they are neat!) if you want to keep them do so in a tank of their own set up to what works best for their needs and enjoy them too!

I’m sorry to sound blunt, but to answer your question, no don’t put afraican claw frogs in with discus and just relax and enjoy your discus and quit throwing things in that tank. You can not improve on healthy discus aquarium

It's not that they wont tolerate it, but that it is not an ideal setup for them at all.

I guess it all depends on how you want to keep them, but you should know by doing so you'll be shortening their lifespan considerably.

Higher temps makes their metabolism go faster and in the long term burns them out quicker. So you may have a fish that could potentially live up to 4 or 5 years under the right conditions vs maybe 1 -2 . Not to mention the induced stress and potential for other illnesses because of it.

No don’t be sorry thank you so much for your response. I think I am going to keep the frogs in their own enclosure I never even considered the temperature being an issue considering this is my first time keeping discus it wasn’t too concerned about the temperature at all LOL. I got all of my babies from Jack Wattley Discus in miami. They have an online store too with a huge variety of discus to choose from!
