African Grey Parrots

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have a grey but I do have Lucy a macaw and I would have to agree with M/L and Red Devil. Each bird is their own. You may get a complete angel or a little devil. With Lucy we have our good days and we have our bad days. There are some days where she will scream for attention so much that I will have to leave the house or put headphones on as loud as they can go. I am right now researching ways to soundproof her room. They are very expensive to own as well toy and food bills are not for just anyone. They are one of the most expensive pets to maintain. They will need alot of mental stimulation and one on one time with you to keep them from developing bad habits such as plucking. Lucy has overpreened but never plucked but it was still difficult to correct. And cleaning is a daily chore especially with greys and all their dust. you will need to vacum and dust regulary. You will also have to change your lifestyle greatly. Birds respiratory systems are very sensitive you will need to avoid cologne, perfume, nonstick cookware, candles, strong scented cleaners and this list goes on and on I can get a link for you if you would like. Also are your roommates willing to put up with everything that will change? Can they handle the screaming and dust? If any of you have allergies I would steer clear of the greys. And I have a schnauzer at home and his tears are nothing compared to Lucy's. She can and will do severe damage to the house if she is given the chance. She has destroyed sheetrock, dressers and base boards.

But even with all of these negatives I wouldn't change a thing. I love all of my animals to death but none of them even come close to her. She shows affection that no other aniamal can. You can tell that she really does want to get your affection from you and she does show it back. And I 2nd want M/L said the only thing I can think of that would compare is a human baby.

So please think very hard before you decide on this there are very few people who can change their lifes so much for them so and they end up giving them to someone else. Just please really really think about this life changing decision.

Well this is more of a year down the road type plan, so i have plenty of time to do more research. Yep I have been looking at all the costs and such. For the boredom during the time i can't be home I have seen suggestion about radios, jungle cds, and a small tv with the Discovery channel planet earth series going. I will be moving shortly, and have a house to my self...so roommates won't be an issue. I'm a compulsive cleaner, so dust isn't an issue at all................and as far as fragrances go, i hate the ordors too, so me and the bird have something in common already lol. I'll probably look into rescues first than purchasing new

my Mr. Cash has hardly any dust or dander from feathers.. my cockatoo makes up for that though... white powder... but i just use FeatherGlo bird bath spray.... cleanses and beutifies feathers and skin...

Can you guys post some pics up here of your feathered friends? Haha...it's still a long decision away to make, but I am thinking I am going to get a bird, just not sure which. someone recently showed me a pic of a Black Palm Cockatoo...pretty :D

Your cockatoo looks great. They shop here in town has one, and he spends alot of time with this knotted rope...he will untie one and look around and if you don't congratulate him, he starts yelling at people......too funny :screwy:

thanks ......my cockatoo is a ham... the only trouble with her is her yelling.. but not bad considering it is 5 mins before she goes to sleep and a few minutes after she awakes.. but when she yells her voice goes through you like a knife.................. good thing she has so many endearing qualities... she was a rescue where mr cash was mine from baby..big difference..

The black palms are beautiful It was the red tailed black toos that drew me into birds but they all cost a pretty penny sadly. And Liz yours are beautiful as usual.
Here are a few of Lucy
