Air breathing fish.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I need some stocking ideas. If it doesn't breathe air I don't keep it, so could you guys just list some air breathing fish, and size, any type.

Polypterus I personally don't have time to list their sizes. I'm at work on a break.:)

Most catfish can gulp air.
Many North America species of catfish I know for a fact can survive extended periods of time out of water as long as they stay moist.
Even little corydoras will blast to the surface ever now and then to get some air.
Other than catfish I thought of snakeheads, lung fish, gourami , alligator gar (to large for aquarium) oh and probably the most well known air breathing fish the Betta.

Yeah I know about them. I should have said, I'm looking for catfish in particular. Do African Butterfly Fish breathe air?
No. When kept mine I never seen it do so not have I read of it. That’s not a cat though they’re related to aros IIRC.

Not so sure about the above post either. thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter will likely know more than I.

I've read ABF's breathe air. They're related to arowanas (which are facultative air breathers) so I think they can too. Never had one myself. My list:

Plecos
Cories
Doradids
Hoplos and callichthys
Clarias
Bichirs
Snakeheads
Bowfin
Gar
Arowanas
Gouramis
Ctenopoma
Skippers
Toadfish
Round Gobies (and most gobies in general)

Copy and pasted below form a little web search:

The large pectoral fins of the Freshwater Butterflyfish are widespread and it uses them to glide over short distances. The wide lizard-like mouth is upturned at the top of the body, and true to form it eats all manner of surface insects. This fish will normally be found at the surface hoover for prey. It has a unique ability to breath surface air and its swim bladder not only regulates buoyancy but also helps with gas exchange while breathing surface air.

I have a 55 gallons with a few cories and the tank is only prtially covered so it isn’t uncommon for me to suddenly be splashed, it’s worse when my rhino pleco does it haha.
