2 unique gems popped up yesterday all over the pike pages… The Xanthic was caught in Russia and the other unknown… i believe the 2nd to be the 1st report of an Axanthic… which is the absence of yellow pigment… Close mutation to Xanthichromism hence the few patches of yellow but ive yet to see one with no chromatophores at all like this show up so grey. Crazy! #EsoxLucius

UV flashed Florida gar… not real morphs IMO but id still like to own them ?… the “marbled” variant is a tell tale sign of the UV flashing. U can see the colors are off on the “albino” aswell. Pretty amazing they can get the eyes to change color with this new treatment but none the less not a natural or “real” mutation…

Any idea if they hold the color their entire lives? I've thought about getting one of these red eye floridas.

I debated the purchase as well… just can’t justify the price for them not being a “real” morph. The colors are most def. Not guaranteed to stay the same. If u look close enough at the “albino” u can tell it has a grey colored back already. Give the breeders credit for this new practice. Its def. Deceiving and makes it almost impossible to decipher a real mutation these days. Time will tell how they turn out. IMO on this one in particular, the eyes will stay red and it will regain regular pigment as it ages. I have a suspected “flashed” lung and after 6-7 yrs its regaining more pigment to my dismay. Pretty disappointing.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Never heard of this process and I can’t find any literature on it. How did you come to find out about it and can you explain exactly what UV flashing is? Fish get plenty of UV in the wild so I’m not understanding how it’ll make them look albino.

A friend with friends in the industry over seas informed me about the process. Ive mentioned it a few times on here when they pop up. Ive always been a color morph fan myself and don’t like seeing people get ripped off. Its an interesting process and i give them credit for exploiting the new interest in color morphs these days. Don’t blame them lol… They have families to feed im sure. Basically they figured out how to “flash” eggs/young with extreme amounts of UV light to make fish change colors. Pretty amazing but it leaves their pigments subject to change down the road. Some examples are the “phantom” red tailed cats and “marbled” alligator gar. Its also been used with good results on Datnoids, lung fish, piranha, tigrinus cats and a few others. Does not work on all species but im sure theyll keep getting better at it. Vendors may be unaware as its still pretty new. Not throwing anyone under the bus just telling people to “watch out” for what u might be paying for. I purchased an odd “albino” lung fish yrs ago. It was never “right” to me. As it ages its colors/patterns change. Thought it was “lutino” but its adding up to be “flashed”. New technology i guess lol… some may stay certain degrees of one color, others may not.

Wow, that blows my mind!! I remember when they started using hormones to boost colors in juvenile fish and when they artificially made fish infertile by irradiating them…now this. Amazing in so many ways…
