It's funny how a lot of people rave about P.b.bichir, because it's soooo rare, yet it's only 'rare' in countries ouside Japan. They're farming them over there and have tank loads of them

Albino ropes and albino ornatipinnis are seriously rare.
agree, there definitely are rarer bichirs worldwide than Pbb. i think people are just jumping on the bandwagon without knowing why :nono:

Just for the record, i have seriously liked them for years before all the commotion and the rave, and for me Pbb has always been my #1, even back when ansorgii/teugelsi were actually rarer than Pbb in the hobby.

as for them being 'farmed' and 'tank loads of them', that's not quite true yet. although there's a fair number of them (in japan). There's been only two successful spawns. not sure if they have started to work on the third. But all the CB individuals so far come from one of the two breedings. And availability of CB Pbb is scarce in japan at this point, since almost all have been sold.

This I didn't know! I could've swore I read posts from our brothers in the east that said they see p.b.bichir juvies regularly.

Thanks for the heads up Inf! :)

if you're talking about outside japan, i bet they were talking about the juvy lapradei that have been captive bred by indonesia somewhat recently. just a case of mistaken identity ;) people quickly came to the conclusion those are baby laps though, so it's not like there ever was any real confusion or anything. those baby laps are certainly becoming quite common in the east.

as for Pbb outside japan, i only know of a very small number of them in taiwan that were imported from japan few months ago.

Hey Ricky what bichirs are you referring to when you say that there are bichirs that are "rarer" than Bichir Bichirs?

There's a bichir (palmas ssp) that i have only seen perhaps two pics of, and i'm not referring to the 'gold dust'.

Although the 'gold dust' would make another good example too. If the 'gold dust' as Frank Schafer calls it truly looks like how it looks in pic, then thats one amazing color variant of the buettikoferi, and i've only seen a few pics of that. Do not confuse with what LFS calls gold dust, as those at the LFS are just plain ol' buettikoferi with a fancier name.

Anyway, when i said what i said, i was thinking aberrant individual (most notably from Guinea) or special color morphs (and these are the morphs i have seen in pics)

- albino ropefish
- albino ornate
- leucistic ornate
- leucistic delhezi
- leucistic (or xanthic?) weeksii: sometimes in pic its hard to tell if it looks white or kinda yellow. photo caption says leucistic.
- leucistic ansorgii(?): thats what the site says (they were one of the few companies that imported wild Pbb). i really can't tell if its ansorgii or endli. i don't know how they tell.
- xanthic(?) ornate: these are yellowish but with basically no black markings on the body. this one is probably not as rare as the ones above. i don't see many pics of it. And i'm not sure if ornates kept in white substrate/white background will have this effect of not. if they do, one could trick other people by doing that. I'm talking about the real thing, and obviously i have no way of knowing whether the magazine pics i saw are trickery or not, but i see no reason for them to lie.

And finally there's this one weird looking weeksii/ornate looking bichir that if i remember correctly is wild caught. very odd, only one i've seen. Oh and some very awesome and rare senegalus too.
