Algae scrubber as bio filter.

2 weeks without a water change, and nitrates are less than 20ppm in both the display tanks.

Doing a 45% water change today with a some 15ppm tap water.

Growing out, on 640nm eating midge fly larva. The only thing left growing is the long strand turf algea. Interestingly the nitrates are zero. 20180916_163833.jpg

I added an acylic lid from another project. The replacement sump for my upstairs display. It is going to be built around the fluidized algea ball idea.20180915_163653.jpg
Waiting for a shipment of weld on 40. That was ordered 2 weeks ago.

The balls are cycling, so should be ready by the time I get it finished.

One week of growth on a new ball20180921_134305.jpg A established algea ball.

Still waiting on 3 weeks of some Weld-on 40. Some suppliers suck.

The new fluidized algea scrubber sump. Is making progress. Hope to have it operational in 2 weeks.

Nitrates are 15ppm in the top tank,
The upflow scrubber was harvested yesterday. It went 3 weeks without cleaning the lights, and a scrum layer was blocking about 35% of the screen.

Nitrates are 25ppm in faux reef tank.
The 25 fish are getting hungry and have overgrazed the growing algea. I added a 640nm red to grow more.

The new sump, should hold this tank in the teen on the nitrate.

I finely installed the new custom built sump. Just in time for a new batch of fry. So I spent my free time working more on the grow out tank. Then an the scrubber filter.20181106_191109.jpg flow test

100 watt fluidized algeaball scrubber.

24 algea covered balls to start
12 half grown.
24 more to build.

So most of the water goes thur a 300 micron sieve filter, then into the algea scrubber. Then into 200 micron filter sock, bio balls, then pump.

36 balls
Nitrates were 25ppm last week.
Today it is 15ppm.

Still debugging the sieve prefilter, as it diverts water away from the scrubber, if it gets plugged.

Filter sock have 3 days and are full.

Fresh green algea, harvested daily. The holes catch it.15429186121901667516724538352027.jpg
The fry guys love it.

Literally turning my (ammonia, nitrates) into free food.
