my dream tank is 20'x5'x5'. with aussie aro tsn silver aro biggest mofo Dovii and red tails do get over 3 foot in captivity!! my dads one was over 40 inch and was the biggest in the country at the time!! he was fed primarily on Whole Trout about a foot long from the super market. and the odd Rat!! or Green Terror!
Don't bother buying one unless you have a tropical pond as it will need a huge home as they grow quickly and end up huge, about 5-6 foot. Don't buy one and think, it'll be ok in this tank for now, because it wont. It'll be ok for about 6 months then it will need a bigger tank or pond depending on its size when bought. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
you're looking at around 5 years to get one over the 3ft. mark. Probably 10+ to get one to 4 ft. if it ever does make it to the 5-6ft. mark you will have one in a several hundred thousand that ever make it to that size. Probably looking at 20+ years for 5ft. Just some helpfull info. It is very likely that in the first 2 years they can make it to 2 1/2 ft. So they definitely need to be started in something with a large footprint. If you start in a 125 gal that will need to be upgraded within a year or two. if started in a 200+ you should be good for the first couple of years, but make sure you are well on your way to something larger before you ever consider this fish!
My advice is dont secretly put them in your grandma's garden pond and pretend you dont know anything when her goldfish start disappearing. She'll never believe you.

Red-tailed Catfish are omnivorous they eat both meat and vegetables so try to feed them a varied diet not just feeders. My one would eat any thing including take mates. Dont get me wrong he was not aggressive or vicious just if he could get them in his mouth he would accidentally eat them.
