instead of going and buying the blue filter pads with the activated carbon in the back.... is ther some sort of foam or somehting i can use instead... i assume ited be cheaper cause you would pay for the sheet and then cut to size but idk what i would use

I think I read something out pot scrubers being used I'm curious about this as well.

I use blue water cooler pads from Home Depot in my koi pond filters. You can cut what you need and save the rest for future use. It is only about 5 or 6 dollars for a sheet that's about 2.5 feet x 3.5 feet.

Yup there are quite a lot of alternatively and very inexpensive too... The foams used in sofa or chairs can be used.. without the carbon. A box of activated carbon can work for ur chemical filtration. Although, I wont advise to.... use it if only necessary to remove some medicine or something like that.... Even the sponge pads used to wash cars and stuff can be used. Just make sure they are the basic ones without any added chemicals lathering or fragrance.... & Also the green scrub pads if u manage to find them in big sheet can be used... this is used for mech and bio too...

Also u can use Ricron... this is the material used in our pillows which can be used as filter floss... synthetic stuff....
@dj... yup pot scrubbers are used as well... they work great in sump or over head filters... i think this is by far the most economical & effective peice of material which can be used instead of bio balls... works great for bio filtration..... :)

Quilt batting and pillow stuffing both work great for mechanical filtration, just make sure it's not treated with a fire retardant chemical before using it. Pot scrubbies are great for bio media and can usually be found in packs of 6-8 at the dollar store.

Ive got an xp3 filled with dollar store pot scrubbies for bio then the xp4 has the cut to fit filter pads from the lfs. When cleaning the xp4 I just use a high pressure nozzle on the hose and bam. Brand new filter pads.

So the pot scrubbong pads can do both bio and mec, and the plastic pot scrubbies, what are they like bio balls or they a pad too?
