american eels?

Definitely an interesting fish. I’d like to see one in a tank, probably hard to keep or just seen as undesirable as pets. I’ve never seen one for sale though, and I think they require full salt as adults. They just return to fresh to breed (I could be wrong). Would make a fun addition to a tank though.
But nothing compares to nice moray.?

I’m not sure about them being able to survive in freshwater, maybe brackish. I’ve used them for bait for stripers, and made the mistake of keeping them in a bucket of fresh water overnight. They were dead in them morning and dropped their slim coats.

Close but other way around lol they live in freshwater and migrate to saltwater to reproduce.

And they will die in a bucket overnight if you have a lid covering it. They are ridiculously hardy. I have kept them on ice before for HOURS, then would hook them through the nose and back, troll them, and somehow be squirming around an hour later.

I think they’re much more powerful swimmers than you’re typical eel though so you probably need to put mesh covers with a zip tie over you intake/outtake. But agree you can go pick one up for $2/3 at a bait store.. they will definitely need colder water and would be a great for a North American native tank
