american lobster as a pet?

They will need to eat a few times a week. You can buy food for them right at the grocery store; clams, shrimp, fish.
They like current too, but don't need a whirlpool in the tank.
Depending on tank size and decor, it's best to keep one per tank unless they are banded. Keep in mind though the bands will eventually fall apart.

I was actually interested in "adopting" a lobster from the grocery store. What size tank do you keep yours in? Are their water specifications the same as other marine fish as far as pH, salinity, etc. are concerned?

I forgot about this thread. You can keep them like normal marine fish - just colder. They like low flow and a good hiding spot. Ours eats 3 times a week (or so).

You might have better luck with spiney lobsters as they are a tropical species they don't require a chiller,"large tanks only 100 gal plus!" They also form colonies and you'll get a lot more activity out of them than you will their cold water cousins. I wouldn't keep them with any sesile inverts though. In addition there are several smaller warm water lobsters that do resemble Main lobsters but, they then to be rather shy species and mainly nocturnal.
