hi guys / gals.
were looking to build a 4x4x4 salty cube for a porcupine.
ive had a 36" amethyst geode for several years and id like to incorporate it into the aquarium.
my question is would the amethyst or the granite its encased in be harmful to the fish via breakdown or toxin leeching?.
the geode weighs 237 lbs so it would be built in to the tank prior to completion.
the reason I want to do this is the colors of it underwater are amazing it throws off light like a 70's disco. and I just think it would be something unusual. looks similar to this one below

the granite might have some iron or copper (and other metals) deposited within it

since it's not a reef tank (i'm assuming) it shoudn't matter as long as you keep an eye on it and take it out if it seems really oxidized

After I saw you post this I have decided to try a semi precious stone tank.
I work at a jewellery store and we sell mostly glass beads but we have a fair amout of semi precious stones...so I thought to do just a 5 or 10 gal tank in the store with some (dull) crystal quartz points and polish amethyst, rose quartz and maybe some black onyx. Since it is only a 5 gal if something happens it won't be a big deal.

The quartz if washed will not have any effect. If you are really worried the only thing you can do for sure is before it goes in the tank soak it in clean salt water maybe throw some fish in and see how they do. Since it is a natural rock there will always be a chance of something but it's slim.

Ive dropped a 10 lb chunk in a sw sump for now gonna test an test see what happens. I do want anemones and corals in the tank.
does anyone have a suggestion for base I dont think glass will work givin the weight of the geode in the center :WHOA:

I don't think you should use that rock until you know what materials are in it or on it.
