Amphilophus labiatus

Yeah, hopefully the black markings stay for the most part. Make sure to update down the road, Buddy. One of my all time fave Amphs on MFK.

Nice looking cichlid but is this really a Labiatus? It is very deep bodied for a Lab. and for its size that hump is more characteristic of a Midas

Short of DNA work, who can ever say with 100% certainty? The entire midas complex in Central America is a work in progress.

In the following paper (2010), Jeffrey McCrary et al go so far as to state that one should only assign taxonomically valid species names to unambiguously identifiable individuals and not to each phenotype that is similar due to only one character, i.e. ‘‘elongate body form” or ‘‘thick lips”

Not a simple case – A first comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis for the Midas cichlid complex in Nicaragua (Teleostei: Cichlidae: Amphilophus)

Cit or lab, who cares, smokin' hot Amph! lol

Very true but the specimen above is very far removed from a True Lab.... and its worrying if it has been sold as such through Jeff Rapps. I've actually seen a few labs shipped into the UK from Rapps that have ended up looking suspiciously Midas or certainly part Midas..

That's the look of a large male Lab.... We can see there's absolutely no depth to the body here and the hump is at about the maximum for this species
