Amphilophus Lyonsi?

So I was poking around looking at new fish when I came across this. They look a little like trimacs which is cool. Was reading they were like little trimacs with 1/2 the attitude. Anyone have any cool stories about them? Could they work (with a large enough tank ofc) in a cichlid "community" with fish of similar size?

They also call them Black Midas -they look like a fader RD. IDK about half the attitude of a trimac I've never heard of that. Amphilophus anything is going to be feisty. The one I saw was actually one of the most aggressive fish I've ever seen. He was wild caught so that might have had something to do with it. With a large enough tank you can house almost anything together.

I thought that was amphilophus saggitae. Or maybe that's a black devil. Anyways I can't have it now, no room, but it looks like something I could add to my list.

In my experience A. lyonsi do not exhibit the same level of aggression as others in the genus, and the aggressive tendencies they do have are directed mostly at conspecifics. I currently have a 5-6" male in a 210 gallon with a wide range of CAs including several P. sysnspilum, V. heterospila, firemouths, Honduran Red Points, and a female salvini. The salvini has been courting the lyonsi for weeks now and occasionally he gets all hot-and-bothered by the attention, although nothing ever comes of it. When he gets excited by the salvini's attention he acts more aggressively, but only to the point of bluffing in contests with one of the synspilum (last photo). So far my lyonsi has been a great member of the community.

To me lyonsi seem more closely related to xCichlasoma festae, and are from the same general area of north western S America.
I have a group of juvies at the moment growing out in a 120 gal, with P syspillum, H carpintus, and H pearsei. They also shared the tank for a short time with Coptodon (Tilapia) zilli
Pics are from when they first arrived from Cichlids of the Americas.

Nice photos! If I was to get one (again, in the future) it'd be in with JD, GT and the likes.

Yep for some reason I was thinking Saggitae. I've been thinking about those a lot lately. Ive always thought Lyonsi should be in a different family I don't really consider them amphs at all. Definitely more chill than a trimac

Ya, I was reading some where they were talking about removing several fish from the amphs group. Another thing is I've seen trimac listed as amphs and also not... Which is it? Think it's not but still.

I wouldn't put anything past those scientist hooligans. They add, they remove, they switch em around. I think there's a lot of drinking on the job site involved.
