An old school Oceanic tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, IMO the Oceanic aquariums were probably the best ever built.

I bought a new 65 gallon Oceanic tank in 1998. It's been up and running ever since.

Hmm, that I could make work and the price is right, thank you. Hopefully the glass arrives safely. We ordered a 40g glass top for a breeder tank we had before I traded it for labor to help me move large tanks around and it arrived in a million pieces. Had to go out to Petco and by one for it. Again thank you, great input and much appreciated.

Yep, we bought a used 53 G oceanic tank used a while back and it’s an absolute tank of a aquarium. Got tiger barbs and a blue Acara green barbs a minnow that miraculously survived berserker the Trimac and a lelupi kavala in it. The glass on these tanks just shines different. Would recommend them to anyone. It’s a shame they stopped making them.

I had a 125 gal Ocenanic from the late 90s until it died in a house fire in 2015. Great tank.

Other brands lids do not it them.
I replaced my lids at one point and had glass cut and bought hinges/handles. I learned that day that store bought lids were a rip off.
That said, 20 years ago "local glass shops" were happy to cut small custom jobs. I recently tried to do the same for a DIY project and had much less luck finding a friendly local glass shop.

Make lids from polycarbonate sheets from Home Depot/Lowes. Cheapish, lite weight and won't break if dropped.

I've started to use double walled polycarbonate (green house) panels for lids. Very light weight, don't break, pass light as well as glass, and stronger than glass for things set on them. Last 4' by 8' sheet I got was around $90. Made many lids with it. It is available from Lowes and Homedepot.
