It's not a slam against you, its the subject. I read plenty of repetitive conversatins about stocking ideas, sand choices, tankmates for X fish etc. and they've all been had before but I enjoy them. And you're right I could have just skipped it, as I do with most fishkeeping youtubers. But It's still surprising how often people ask if nitrates really are bad. It's a byproduct of decomposing poo. do you really want your fish living in that?
I hear ya, I do however like jumping on old topics with ppl I never got into it with before.

Notice I dont feel the need to go on about my personal thoughts on nitrates because I easily could, but, like you I know its not good.....but so many ppl will buy this guys bs, i gotta call it out, and hope his followers end up here too.

Well
I agree. This has always seemed to me to be a no brainer. Even as a newbie several decades ago.

And if someone doesn't like my comments, feel free to skip by them. lol
, i wasnt posting for advice, it was more to see how you guys feel and if you knew the dude, and how we can stop bs like that from spreading, and, just making conversation

i dont think
I learned about nitrates over 50 yrs ago, when I set up my first wild turtle tank. I had no idea what nitrates were, or even that there was such a term, but even as a young kid I understood what sh*te water smelled like, and how that issue could be resolved. C'mon now. Anyone asking about that with decades into this hobby, is either a simpleton, or looking for an excuse to not do the work.

i dont think anyone was asking, it was more about getting this guy on blast and hoping he and his praisers get a wake up call to save the fish.

I know Im a long time keeper, but I keep coming across guys like this, and Ive not been keeping up last 5 years or so with any new discoveries.

I also know lots of you bash all the youtube guys but I know lots of them are good too, and I take lots of stuff with a grain of salt.

Anyways, but what are your thoughts on this post?
Oh, but you did ask.

My stance on nitrates is that they are by base toxic and probably not good to have whatsoever in your tank, However being able to keep a nitrate of zero at all times for many fish keepers is nearly impossible due to the level of filtration and maybe even vegetation and processing power tank would require. i usually keep my 250g around 10-30 in terms of nitrate. i perform 50-60% WCs a week but it doesn't scare me if the Nitrates rise above 30. this being said my rule of thumb is that have nitrates as low a possible but not to overthink it if its over say 50~

There’s still some old timers here…I’m from your era since 2007

Seems we are having a good discussion

ah what's up man, your in SoCal so I may have hit you up back in the day when I was going to LA all the time for reptiles and fish stuff.

I'm in Bakersfield North of LA two hours, my town sux lol but I just spent a couple weeks in Costa Mesa, Newport, Huntington, Laguna......then as usual I go hang for a few days around Melrose, Sunset, Korea Town, Little Armenia area just grubbing, hitting musician shops and looking for fish and reptile shops, I just can't imagine affording to buy a house over there, even rent is insane.

Not sure where you are over there............used to be a couple good stores in Sherman Oaks area, Marks always had clean fish, a friend used to work at Underwater Depot and now owns a shop here, Jeff Steel..........Aquarium City was a cool one over there.

Used to be a cool place in Burbank I think called Rainbow Pets maybe and they had tons of oddballs and more rare stuff but the fish were usually trashed sadly.

Anyways, hit me up if you know some other good ones I should check out that are around an hour from hollywood or burbank area

you can pm, so we don't derail the thread too much.

Yeah I'm not recognizing too many names from back in the day here.
