Every time I walk past the little reptile cages in Petsmart I say to myself I'm going to get a snake. The only tanks I have available are standard 10 gallon aquariums so I was just wondering if anything could happily live in one. I don't know anything about reptiles as of now. I just wanted to see if I could even have one before I really got attached to the idea of buying one. Any snake will do. Another problem is I have a mom who is terrified of snakes...

So yes, no... maybe?

a dead one!
lol
invest in a 20 long and you can get a ball python for a good year
or a sand boa
or a kids boa for life
or a milk snake for a good year

Nope.

If you really want a snake, you're going to have to devote more resources. You can get a 20g long and start out with a baby snake. You will have to upgrade as it grows though.

EDIT: Oh I see the mom problem. Well it depends how much she fears snakes. There are some people that literally freak out when they see even a picture of a snake. My mom didn't like snakes and she still doesn't, but I kind of got it anyway. She is used to it now.

Show her you are responsible and will care for it. Try to reason with her, and explain that in reality, 99.6% of captive snakes pose little to no harm to human beings. They make great pets.

I have the same problem.
Being religous my mom thinks snakes are "EVIL"
I had a few snake eggs the other day and she forced me to kill them.
I hated it....seeing the poor awesome creatures destroyed.

Sand boas make good pets and are easily able to be in a 10 g tank .

i would go with sand boas, they are easy to keep, they are friendly, and they are small...

I do, their prices are WAY inflated, I saw a "pretty phase" ball python for $120! further more, it was just a run of the mill ball python that was no different than any other one that I have seen for $20 at a show.

WOW that is outrageous! I work for Petco and a ball on sale can be as low as $29.99, I think when it's not on sale it is $79.99 (I'm not 100% it's either that or $59.99). Depending on the size of the snake you can start off in a 10 gallon but you'll have to more it to a bigger tank later. The sand boa is one that you can keep in a 10 and maybe a rough or smooth green snake. The nice thing about the green snake is that they eat bugs not rodents.

I really understand about fear of snakes. I worked for about 6 months at Petco and I ending up taking over the reptile and aquatics department all of the sudden because the specialist quite. I knew that the snakes hadn't eaten in a couple weeks and that they needed to eat. So I went in with gloves, shaking and teary eyed and got them out to feed them. I had to work though my fear. Not only did they have to eat , how could I sell something I couldn't handle? Now I have not problems with snakes and my oldest son has one but I am still not a snake fan.
