I had a customer in the store this weekend who had a couple of catfish that he could not identify. He showed me a picture, and just as an educated guess I thought they look African(again only a guess). They had frog-like eyes that he said they could blink. They were a dark brown or gray and he said they had a little silver on the bottom-sides. They had grown from about 3" to around 6-7" in a year. I would love to know what they are if anyone has an idea. I don't have any pictures unfortunately, but I might be able to recognize it if someone has a pic to compare with.

The body was a typical catfish shape, and he thought they resembled the African Bullhead picture that I showed him.

Thanks.

Catfish don't have eyelids so they can't blink but i've seen mine move there eyes down or up into there heads making it look like they blinked

I knew that no catfish that I have heard of has eyelids, but I wasn't sure if there was a breed out there that did. What you suggest could be what is going on with is catfish, I haven't seen my catfish do it, not to say they don't.

All my Catfish, Plecs and Cory cats do that. Look at them long enough and they'll "wink" at you. I didn't realize they didn't have eyelids, so I guess it's their eyes rolling up then down. I know it's adorable.

yeah cats sometimes do roll their eyes when you are staring at them
usually my TSN rolls its eyes every time i take the cam close to take a pic

did the cat have feathered barbels? a pronounced pointed snout?

could you tell us any body features. Colors dont do anything for ids

just rolling eyes.
oh it's a catfish!!:headbang2:ROFL:

sorry i couldn't resist

I tried to describe it as he did as the pictures were not very clear. From what I could see the shape was similar to a african bullhead. The only thing is that AB are only supposed to get 4" and he said these are 6"+

It seems to me that he over-exaggerated the "blinking" and what he saw was normal catfish behavior.

try looking up the various chrysthichthys species on planet catfish. They have kind of froggy eyes so that would be a good start :)
