Anyone keep/kept sugar gliders or prairie dogs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the federal ban was indeed lifted, but keeping them as pets is still banned in several states, including Mass, sorry mike.

Prarie dogs are definitely a nasty little critter, they have a wicked bite.

Now sugar gliders rock!!!!!!!!

There are those who would say they stink, only if you don't clean the cage regularly. Also they are a very affectionate pet who simply love being with their owner.

I recently decided to get rid of my colony, I had 2 male and 3 female.

We are doing a huge amount of work on our house and we divested ourself of 90% of our zoo as it were. I figured it would be much better for them to have homes where they were not subjected to the whole renovation move and stack, and chemical smells of substances used. After all I can get my zoo back after we finish the house.

I will find some pictures of my babies for you

prairie dog are excellent pets. they bond to only one person and aren't some stupid rabbit or guineapig....which is part of the problem

once they bond to you...they need attention 24/7. they love to be rubbed and touched and get all weird and stiff when you scratch certain parts. its a pet i can only recommend for someone who has time and no other pets since they need to be the focal point. they need a diet of mostly various grasses and hays

-personal experience.

I would wonder if your prarie dog is the same as our gopher, which is what im referring to as having a wicked bite(personal experience :P)

Yet, very cool that you have had personal exp with a gopher, got any pics

Suger gliders are great pets. Same in respect to theyre need for attention. Once they bond to you, they want to be with you all the time (thats how my female was). The only other person who could hold her for any resonible amount of time was my girlfriend. Anyone else just got crabbed at.

A store here had a prarie dog years ago but I don't remember how much it was sold for.I would like to have a group of chipmonks as a pet,but not in a cage.I would just like to have them living in my yard.

If your considering a prairie dog you should just get a Richardson's ground squirrel. They have all the pros and none of the cons of a prairie dog. I had one for 5 years he was one of the coolest pets I've ever had.

The ban has been lifted, otherwise my LFS wouldn't be selling 3 of them for $138 each. Two males and one female. Although I do live in Illinois, so it's been lifted here at least. Check your local law books.

I got to play with them. they are awesome. Tons of work, worse poopers than hampsters or ferrets. At least those two go in a corner. Prairie dogs go where ever they are, so good luck with that if you get one! ;)

At the pet store by my house they just got in two prairie dogs. They had so much energy and were chasing each other all over the place like little fat ferrets :]
