i used GE Silicone II door and window on my 518 gallon and it worked awsome, so far no problems and hoping none in the future, i had it filled outside withe goldfish in it just as a test to see if it would hold water and the filters worked good and everything and it worked beautifully
I was told not to use the GE silicone II because it had mold protection stuff in it, the chemicals for the mold protection will not allow algae to grow, and it will be harmful to the fish, hopefully with a tank that large it will dilute all the chemicals.

I am going to be using Dow Corning 732, if DC 832 were available in clear than I would be using that with out a doubt.

The 832 is so far the strongest silicone product that is suitable for use in aquariums and will adhere to glass. The tensile strength of the 832 is 350 psi and will elongate 420% before yielding; but is only available in black, grey and off-white.

732 is available in black white and clear with a tensile strength of 334 psi and will elongate 540% before yielding

For reference the GE 1 silicone and Dow corning 791 and other similar products have a tensile strength of 120 psi and will elongate 50% before yielding

Do your homework and come to your own conclusions, all of these companies publish this information online
Thanx. Funny you mention the 732-I saw an open box full of new tubes heading off to another division at my job today. Took everything I had not to swipe a few. I havent seen the 832 anywhere here yet but I'll check McMaster.

You will probably find most folks will not use the II because it has the mold inhibitor. Then there are others that swear it's fine and they've used it for years, etc.

Those of us who have a lot invested and have done at least some research will not use the II. It's just as easy to get the GE I if that's what you're looking for.

I've got tubes of the GE II Door & Window stuff on hand and it doesn't have the Bio-seal label nor a reference to mildewcide, that's the kitchen and Bath one. And I can guaranty I can grow mold/mildew & algae on the window and door stuff :(.

thats kinda funny really, i bought a 4 pack of the window/door GE I last week, i looked at the GE II and it stated something on the tubes themselves about being mildew/mold resistant, the GE I did not, so i got the GE I

id rather be safe than sorry.

yeh but u go on about if u havnt heard of it then its obviously no good. thats a arrogant thing to say. hell i aint saying my boss is the best all i was saying is that years in the hobby as a fishkeeper dont mean crap about howgood you are at buildng tanks. its how long and how many youve built
Might I suggest that you Relax and understand that the same products can be sold in different countries under different names, as well as understand that your trying to start an issue where there shoudn't be one. I'm actually very surprised that JohnPTC and Dr.Joe have showed you the good will to actually entertain your rant. They simply have not heard of this product which is obviously something which you seem to enjoy using and would like to know more about it as I'm sure that if it's a better product then what they are currently using then they would make a switch... Personally I'd like to know what this product is in North America or if it's available here (perhaps it's banned for sale here due to some type of ingredient which would make it illegal for sale here)

As far as your statement above about "it's how long and how many you've built" I've never in my life heard such crap come from someone. That simply is not the case, it's about research, experiences and lessons learned. By your way of thinking, Ford should be the best built cars in the world...yet they still end up in the shop being fixed just as often as any other car. Considering your previous statment mentions that your boss has tried all of 5 other types of Silicone I wouldn't consider that much in terms of experience or research, I'd say more that it seems he's found a silicone that meets his needs and price point the best while giving the lowest failure rate to date.

Ok... I think I'm done my rant now.

I agree, if they're label changing and my stores aren't up to date :irked:, I'd like to know about it be fore I have to change product in mid-project!.

If it's in your hand and doesn't say Bio-Seal or mildew resistant blah blah blah go for it!

Here' the goods on the 732 and 832:
http://www.reptech.co.uk/data_sheets/Primer 1200 Clear Product Information.pdf
http://www.dowcorning.com/content/publishedlit/80-3258.pdf

I like the across the board rating of NSF, FDA, UL and MIL on the 732. Together with the tensile it would be a definite go for me.

For those of you not familiar with NSF:http://www.nsf.org/
Most restaurant equipment is certified under NSF standards.
for tank building/rebuiling its best to follow johnptcs advice and use the primer, this will ensure that you get the most adhesion and therefore strength, for resealing its prob not necessary.... but cant hurt, for the cost I think its worth it.

we use a lot of dow corning stuff where I work too, but nothing clear unfortunately
