That's an interesting observation. I never saw that with my bigger groups. My nested pair at Dallas didn't have color at all... full silver. (Actually all of that group were full silver with dark grey tails.)
My solo arapaima at Underwater Adventures in MN was almost 1/3 bright red from the tail up once she hit 6' long.

I've never personally seen them have issues in a big enough tank. As long as they aren't spooked into them.

The Amazon display I did in Minnesota was a big triangle shape, and the one I had in that collection did just fine with them.

thanks, i had seen it mentioned a few times, and wanted to know if they were a serious problem...

why do people say they have problems? can they not back out of the corner? i personally find this hard to believe, as they can turn 180 degrees with a flick if their tail.

See if this thread is still alive...
Just recently got one 'by accident'...got stuck in our factory stormdrain after the floodwaters receded.
He's doing good, but I've looked at pictures from Johnptc's tank, and see a lot of 'sharp' objects in it.
Does your Arapaima ever scratch itself?
So far, Mr. T, (as I call him) manages to scratch himself on even the smallest corner of a plastic net that I have around the pump.
He scratched himself again, just at the rim of the eye and I'm worried about it, trying to find ways to avoid him scratching himself...

For the scratch, anything that is possible to make it faster healing?
I'm limited in my resources right now, we're building the bigger pond as fast as possible, but anything I can check or do here, I'll try it.

He still is as normal as he can be, as tame as he can be, comes over and eats normal, lets himself touched on his head and sides...very nice and happy fish. Just worried about those scratches he manages to get...

Thanks in advance.

Hello Zfishies,

Thanks for the reply... I looked at the pond, Mr. T and location of the pump.
Figured out indeed that he dashes for smaller fish.
Doing that, he crashes into the pump that's in the corner.

So I've changed that for now, with the pump now hanging more to the middle of the pond on a rope.
His dashing is always in corners where he can trap smaller fish I guess.
So hopefully, with the pump hanging from a rope, free from the bottom, even if he'd dash into it, it would swing away and minimize chance of scratching himself again.

Hope it helps and hope that the scratch near his eye heals...just freakin' worried about anything not normal on him.
If you read the original thread (search for stormdrain & arapaima), then you'll notice that I am a newbie to Monsterfish.
Never thought of them, always liked smaller fish and planted tanks until he showed up at my doorstep.

Totally convinced me to go Monsterfish... hahaha..

Cheers,
Luc
