Arawana in tank with home softener system

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don’t know the science but I have a whole house water softener and keep whatever I want. Ive had peacocks, frontosas, etc that all did great as well as a albino aro, dats, plecos, etc. If I really wanted hard tap, I can just run a hose from the garden spigot. Are you sure they are softening that as well?

this is the info I’m looking for. This seems to be as 2 sided as politics for some reason. I’ve heard the same. Buddy of mine, doesn’t house Africans because of water softener but he does everything else and never had problems. Others say it’s a delayed death trap. Appreciate your feedback and hope to get some others to chime in to give me confidence.

the outside garden hose is also connected. The entire system is and per plumber no choice unless making cuts. Plus I live in New York so winter months would be hard considering that water would freeze up and no way to regulate temp from outside faucet. I’d also hVe frozen pipes.

At this point just roll with it, and see if any issues come up with its use. The only thing left for you to try (that isn't too difficult) is add substrate that naturally adds calcium to the water like Texas holey rock or coral substrate.

I read a thread maybe last year not sure but some experienced members said no to the home water softener. I guarantee members will chime in with a definite answer for you.
Thank you for reply. I’ve heard it all unfortunately. That’s my issue. If it’s a hard no, I need to either take tank down or literally turn water softener off, run water for 2 days, empty soft water, then fill tank up with hard water, turn it back on and water won’t be soft for 2 days. I’d like to stay married and not kill myself in the process lol.

PH is still fairly high. I can do smaller water changes to acclimate which is fine. It’s the hardness and lack of minerals that I think will catch up to me. I have lime stone in there, do you know if that helps?

Limestone in the tank will help to add the calcium that was lost from the water softener.

I cut and bypassed my water softener for the cold water but not the hot. I have a mixing valve and I put a sink in my fish room. I'd say mix is probably 70%cold not softened and 30% hot softened. No ill effects on any of my fish including my tangs.

my tank is so so so far away from where water comes in. It’s in 800sqft reenforced office above the garage. There is a small bathroom at bottom of stairs that I use for WCs. Guess it can’t hurt to have the guy come back again.
So is it safe to say water softeners are a no go for any fish or are their species that I could switch over to? Thought?

It's a risk, and can go either way. My water source doesn't do well for fish when it goes through a water softener (based on folks I know that have tried).
