right now i have a small section (7-10 gallons) divided off from the rest of my 35 gallon tank, and in the larger section i have a pair of jewel cichlids, a feather-fin syno cat, and a red tail shark (she is the smallest at 3 inches). my question is: are there any crayfish that could be put in my tank without being eaten by my fish AND without my fish being eaten by it?

thanks in advance:)

crayfish are predatory scavengers, they eat when they are hungry, they attack when they feel threatened. So, No is the answer I am locking in.

Hi connor,
Cherax destructor despite the name is fish friendly .They have huge pincers but are very laid back /lazy.
There are also dwarf crays which can be kept with fish. In my opinion all C. quads. sold as blue lobsters will sooner or later catch and eat fish ,though some people will disagree.
All the best,
g.John

I have kept crayfish with cichlids on several occasions, but I have never tried it with the other two. the only problem i have run into with keeping them together comes just after the crayfish molt. the jewels will pick them apart when their exoskeletons are still soft. oh yeah, of course make sure the crayfish isn't bigger than the jewels otherwise you will just have a crayfish tank

I have a "blue lobster" (crayfish) which lives happily in my 30 gallon with a 1.5" and 2" platy and my sabretoothed 'cuda. On one occasion he nipped the tail off off the little platy when the fish entered the bamboo tunnel he's made his home. The tail grew back and I'm just waitin for my cuda to take interest in the fish. That's the only time, mine isn't really all that sneaky, I also spoil him with meal worms and shrimp by pushing them down to him with a spoon and he grabs 'em, pretty cool to watch him cut the worms in half with his claws.

i used to have mine in almost the same place. i had 1 jewel, 1 red tail shark, and feeders. the craw killed everything but the feeders. i was a novice back then.

get a ten gallon and make his own home, and get a nice cherax species that gets big,and youll be feeding it fish so what do you think?

I keep Cambarellus Shufeldtii, dwarf cajun craws. They max in size at about 1.5 inches so oyu hav eto be careful aobut fish esting them. I keep them with HEterandria Formosa's and have never had a problem

I've been keeping two 3in crayfish with small guppies and tetras. It seems that the fish are too small for the crayfish to grab ahold to. They are blue and either clarkii or allenii, I cant tell the difference.

We have crayfish in 7 of our 12 tanks. As long as the fish are large enough to take care of themselves and the crays have a place to hide and get away from the more aggressive fish then they can co-exist just fine. It's also importiant to keep all of them well fed and to spread the feedings out over two or three times a day to prevent conflict over food.

They only tanks we don't have crays in are the breeder...fry...and grow out tanks. These are adult crays by the way...small ones should be grown out on thier own before introducing them into the main tanks.
