are there any fish-safe crayfish????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From my own experience the answer would be no, either the cray will cause problems, or it will get eaten, maybe not right away, but enventually. Just last week I had an 8" local cray molt then get torn apart by an 8" bluegill. This is after about 7 months together.

At last count we have about a dozen crayfish from 6" to 9" long in our tanks. thier tankmates include 9" red bay snooks...14" Pbass...20" silver arowana...10" Oscars...various smaller pbass....BKN...plecos...18" RTC....16" TSN...angelfish...GT's....Red Jewels.

The key seems to be giving the crays a proper home that they can defend. Our's collect extra food and wall themselves into thier homes when they moult with rocks from the aquarium. We have a couple of them that have lost claws over the years but we rarely ever loose one. Although the one in the RTC's tank has learned to be VERY careful...

well i have good experience with keeping crays in tanks with large fish.
as long as there is plenty of hiding and plenty of food for the fish, i dont have casualties.

i keep my crayfish in a 40g tall tank with tons of guppies. the guppies breed so fast that the cray cant keep up. also im sure the fact thats its a TALL tank helps out alot too. also iv'e had no problems before keeping one with an african butterfly fish (always stays on top)
