Someone is selling these on craigslist as "Red Monk Cichlids". Apparently they're a breeding pair approx 6-7", that he aquired from a lfs. Just wanted to run the pics he sent to me by you guys to see if they are what he thinks they are, or look more like hybrids.

Thanks!!

Your fish pictured are whats now know as P. melanurus, they used be named under P. synspilus, but are now a junior synomyn.

They aren't P. bifasciatus, as there is no bi lateral stripe displayed.

Enjoy them.:)

Thatnks Nutty. I didn't know synspilus was now melanurus. Sheesh. Do they color up more the larger they get? All the pics I've seen of syns or when I google melanurus, the fish are much nicer than these ones for sale in the pics.

expect to have people refer to them as syn for the next 2-4 years. usualy takes a while for people to catch on to a reclassify especialy in fish and plants... as to your question on color i have raised fry of syn/mel and ive always ended up with a few fish that are albino if you will... complete almost platnum in color. theres always some oddballs in every batch. not to say they dont diserve a home and they are cool looking too. just my own experience.

i love hearing names for fish... red monk cichlid lol!

No doubt, right? I had to google for the scientific name. In any event, it doesnt' look like I'll be buying these fish. He asked for offers without a stated price, but turns out he wants to get what he paid at the LFS for them. Breeding pair or not, they just aren't nice enough to pay retail price.

Not when I have a bunch of Don Conkel's syns (even he called them syns!) growing out, anyway. Which I think I paid $2 a piece for.

The problem i find with melanurus (synspilus) available, is many different populations have been crossed bred, then giving you an aquarium strain fish, which can then end up looking colourless.

I recommend to find out the source, especially with these guy's, as there's so much rubbish swimming round in peoples tanks.

You can't go wrong with Don's stock, if you can make sure they're the Rio Sarstun poplulation. These guys if looked after right will bust into colour!!

Already posted elsewhere, but here's a Rio Sarstun pair i'm keeping, still loads of growth to go.;)

Sweet! Gorgeous fish, Nutty.

I am not sure if I got the Rio Sarstun or not. When I bought them, I believe there was a choice of gold back or not gold back... and i think I went with the not gold back... Did I choose wrong?
They're only about 2" now, so still not showing much color yet.
