Arowana - Easy To Keep?

Are Arowanas easy to keep? I might be getting a silver, but wanted information on what they eat, growth rate etc. Generally, are they easy fish to keep, and is it reccomended for a 100 gallon tank (its still only 5 inches at the store)?

Theyre not hard to figure out, but they have their specific issues and I personally think 100 is way too small for an aro.

they are easy to keep but you will need a hard cover on your tank cuz they do like to jump... and will find anyway to get out when freaked... a 100 gallon is to small even a 5 inch aro will out grow that quickly... i got mine at 5 inch. in march... it is now over 18 inch... depending on what and how you feed it you will see 1 to 2 inches a month for at least the first 6 months... so the 100 gallon would work at first but you would be needing to go to a much larger tank very soon

I wouldn't call this a minimum, but it is good tank size to keep them in.

get them switched over to arowan pellets stay away from live food ever. frequent water changes 20% twice a week

Aro's are one of the hardiest fish in the hobby, and as long as you give them plenty of space, good food, a secure lid and ample filtration, your aro will grow and prosper. 100 gal. is a fine grow-out, but silvers grow FAST (faster than Asian's, for sure) and you will find yourself needing to replace the tank within a year. Your best bet, if you want to get into the aro game, is to invest in a bigger set up first.

you won't need to do 20% water changes twice a week... just make sure you have good filtration and you will be fine... I do 20% once a week.. but i am lazy and have gone 2 to 3 weeks without doing one... he never acted weird or unhappy... they are no different from anyother fish just make sure your numbers are right and do your usual water change... and you'll be fine

Not really easy. some of them, such as the African arowana, are difficult to feed and it's costly as well. They also tend to take up a lot of room as they get older.

Arows are awesome but you should expect that they are sometimes moody...go off food and fast once in awhile...need a heavy lid or at least something heavy to hold the lid down due to jumping.. and do not feed live food simply because it is not as nutritious and often contributes to disease passed from feeder fish..other then that they are quite healthy and easy to keep..water changes are a big plus with any fish.. the better and more often the changes the better and less often any problems with growth or diseases of your fish.. check the arow forums for compatable tankmates... before you add any new guys to the arow tank.. and good luck..arows are special and they are beautiful awesome monster fish.. you will definitly enjoy one.. that price is steep but depending upon location and availability for your area if could be okay.,.check other local fish stores.
