My arowanas are over two feet long and very skittish and always jumping. I fed them crickets the other night and one jumped right out and on the floor. I anyone walks quickly by the tank they also jump. Everytime they jump though they keep messing up their barbels or if its really bad, they lose scales. When he jumped out he lost three. That was the first time he actually jumped out. The other times they just hit the top but cut themselves on the braces. Anything I can do to lesen the frequency of this other than getting a bigger tank or elling one? they are both in a 180 gallon right now and both are past the 2 ft mark.

I would try one of two options.
lower the water level so they have less of a chance of accually getting out of the tank
and
take the hood offf and use a piece of plexi glass it will be snoother so they wont get cut when they hit it

You need a larger tank...A night light might help to keep them calmer...But they might be fighting eachother and can't escape inside the small space
They need a bigger tank.
I was in the exact spot you are in a couple years back. Very sad watching your aros tear themselves up. Once I moved mine from the 180g to a 450g their behavior changed dramatically, unbelievably calm.

doesnt work, makes it even worse. The more swimming space you tank away from the aro, the more its going to jump. Lowering the water level is useless too unless you can manage to drop the level by 3-4 feet. These things can aim and hit a bug on a tree branch a couple feet from the water so Im sure a hole is nothing for them.SpJc11;4463495; said:
Try handling your aros more. I pet mine. They used to get freaked out but they're ok with it now. They went from skittish to liking the attention.

IMO, the only real solution is to get them a larger tank....they need more space. More space = less stress.
