Hello, im getting ready to start an electric blue jack dempsey breeding project, i just acquired a small electric blue jack a little over an inch, i have him in a 45 alone, with a fluval c4 filter and an aquaclear 30 attached to it( more filtration the better). I just wanted to know at what size can i start trying to breed him or her??

Your best bet is to add a few blue Gene Dempseys with your electric blue now when their juvi's & let them pair off, once a pair is established seperate them right away

I would really like to do that but all the stores in my area only have 2.5-4" regular dempseys, so my only real option for the moment is to grow him/her out as soon as possible

They hit maturity over 4 inches... Your project for EBJD Fry will be along one.
If you cannot get some Blue Gene JD...then
try pairing the EBJD with a JD and then starts the story of segregating the BGJD's and again pairing the BGJD with EBJD.

Thanks for the info, I know it'll probably take a while but I wanted to do this breeding project for awhile now, and it's strange that these guys breed so late, i've had regular Jacks breed at 2.5 inches

sorry for my ignorance here...breeding two EBJD will not result in EBJD's? Are they a mutation or hybrid? I've seen them at Big Al's here and was thinking about buying a couple for my HRP tank.

I find there more friendly than regular jack dempseys, and I believe there a mutation, also much more delicate than the average dempsey in terms of water condition

oh that explains why they are so expensive thanks
Yup. More prone to die when smaller than 2", very slow growth rates, more prone to illness....
30$ a pop sounds about right haha
