Atabapo II

That makes a bunch of sense indeed. I'm thinking maybe I'll have to move the pair to the 125gal and drop the pH and hardness as much as possible. Got them in the 300gal, but thats a little large to be completely successful. Perhaps it will work though.

That would be interesting to see if there was a geographical variant of sp. 'atabapo II'.

They are no where near adult yet is the thing. They are maybe just starting to hit subadult.
 
My 8-9" Atabapo II does color morphology changes depending on mood as what is described as "young" and "adult" in the pics.
He looks like the "young" pictures when its feeding time but goes into "adult" colors when he is just chilling.

I found these pics of larger "Atabapo" raised in captivity. Not even a slight hint offered on these two. Although they do have the typical LLE for a tank raised "Atabapo"

Perhaps there are geographical variants like with many other Crenicichla species??
 
Those pictures of the real red ones are edited! Look at buddies arms they are even Red lol
