This tank is going to be simple.

Just like any other freshwater tank.
Marine, simple, marine, simple, just like freshwater...hmmm somthings not right here. You might want to do a bit more reading on what is required for a workable marine tank, even a "simple" one. Maybe hit the MASA forum and look at the new to the hobby section, good starting point. Tank journals are good as well to give you an idea of what look/community can be acheived on what sort of budget. Bear in mind that a lot of the tanks there have had many, many, thousands of dollars poured into them (literally).

I've seen the simple method done before, and to date, there has been no problems with the tank.

It's my loss if I stuff it up so why don't you just let me do it myself?

Okay, you guys seem pretty clued up so i'll tell you how my mate has his going and tell me what can (and will if need be) go wrong etc.

3' tank, standard 30gal with a single filefish, a few native crabs. Gravel and sand collected from the beach where he caught it. At first he used sea water from the ocean, and then started to change to tap water by water changes. He has just got honeycomb rock in it, and runs a fluval 303 (i think) canister filter. His salinity is at 1.024 and a pH of 8, a temp of 14-16C.

I want to do something like this, with a 2' tank, but a little different.

Instead of an external canister filter with filter media, I want to do one with LRR. I also want to use proper live rock from the rock pools and stuff, that has been quarintened free of nasties and stuff. And add some native sea grass and stuff, make it look all good. I will also have a light on it, a blue one. I'm not growing coral so it doesn't need to be very high, but the light won't be weak either. The substrate will also be coral sand or silver sand.

What do you two think? What could I do better. I don't want to add huge extras and stuff, only stuff like the essentials.

okay if you are going to keep fish you should not use lr as your only form of filtration. it just doesnt have the capacity. secondly file fish should be kept in much larger tnaks nless it is a qt or temporary setup. most fish should be kept at a coonstant so 26 degrees is more ideal un less u want to invest ina hciller which is not necassery. thirdly combine your own live rock with store bought stuff. store bought stuff will be much much more porous but tend to not be as live as rockpool stuff so within 3mnths the store bought stuff will be great. you want to keep native 'sea grasses' (macro algae) you will need atleast 2xt5 or 3-4x t8 bulbs. this will also let you keep your live rock live on the algae (macro) side of things.

never use tapwater nless its dechlorinated and nsw (natrual seawater) is way nbbetter then tapwater however if u can afford it a reverseosmosis unit to poduce ASW (artificial seawater) is ideal.

also have you ever kept a marine tank? i doubt u have if so i would srsly consider getting something larger. stability is key. this will also allow you to keep diffeent fish or different types of fish.

also dont go buying a trigger/file/whatever as your first fish. get something simple like a nemo. see how you go and then move onto bigger better things. its like tring to keep a really delicate stingray in a tank suitable for carp.

Leaf fish as in Ctenopoma I presume? Only ever seen one pair of Monocirrhus before and they weren't for sale. The Cteno's are better anyway, more active and easy to get onto prepped food. Was thinking about getting another group of about 5, haven't kept them in a while.

Allright, I had me Sole Fish in with me Murray Cod, because I thought the Murray wouldn't see him. He lasted a month or so... But yesterday, the Murray Decimated him. He was all torn up. So now I know nothing is safe to put in the tank with him, not even camoflaged, flat lying fish, lol.
