I find these to be great bottom dwellers for small to medium size Central and South American cichlids.
There are species ranging from from California in the west coast , and Florida and Texas southeast, thru Cntral America, to Brazil and Peru in S America.
I find the species Awaous banana, in most rivers in Panama. And though non-aggresive, they do hold their own.
They are sand sifters, and remind me of mudskippers, although I have never seen them leave the water .
They can be territorial, and two will squable in a 6 ft tank.
To me they seem to occupy a similar niche to Asian Loaches.
