Well...
Mudpuppies
-Eventually turn into Tiger Salamanders
-Get Larger
Axolotl
-Smaller
-Never become a Salamander, unless the owner intentionally tries too. Which it turns into a Fire Salamander (I think its a fire salamander)

Personally I prefer Axolotls, what size tank is it going into. Also both don't work well with tankmates.

Sorry to tell you this, but a 10g tank won't support either. Axolotls get over a foot in legth, and live on avarage 10-12 years (there has been one exception of 25 years, so the actual life-span under good conditions is a lot higher than 10-12). It is very, very rare that axolotls become salamanders, even when enticed by owners/ scientists.

Mud puppies will in the majority of cases turn into salamanders (I am guessing that what your are calling "mud puppy" is the larva of the Tiger Salamander). They will require a tararium, and also will not be happy in a 10 gallon tank.

I think he is talking about the ones that get to two feet in length and stay aquatic all their lives, just like axolotls. A 10gallon is way too small for either one. I suggest getting a 20gal long and getting an axolotl. Mudpuppies get larger and require cool water, they are much more sensitive to water quality.

Unless I remember right, neither will turn into any type of salamander. Mudpuppy's are big and brown.

Here's an axolotl

Here's a Mudpuppy

Note are both sub adult to adult size. Mudpuppy's get between 12 and 16in. Axolotl get like a foot. Apperently axolotl are thaught to be sort of an off shoot of tiger salamanders and may occasionally metemorphisize for unknown reasons. They will need atleast 20 galloons of water alone.

Wow, the confusion...

Mud Puppies (genus Necturus) do not turn into salamanders, you are thinking of larval Tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) which may be erroneously sold under the same name, or sometimes as "water dogs".

Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) do not turn into Fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra), they are completely different species from different continents.
