subscribed!!! ive always been interested in these filters but never knew too much about them. looking forward to seeing the progress!

I like how you are running the water through the frame rather than an additional pipe. What do you estimate the weight of water and media to be when done? I am a little worried the PVC may not be strong enough.

Also going to try different holes for the spraybar... either holes or slots...any tips?

Slots should allow more flow with less back pressure if you have enough volume to spread the water evenly across the shower.

From what I've read on ponding boards, these work best w/ high flow, wide open flow. You may need to try a couple of configurations of a spray bar.

I might have to reinforce it a little. Looks like 30 lbs of Lava rock to start and some fairly weightless Japmat. Looks like about 4 gallons of water at any one time.
So somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-65 lbs

I was thinking the same thing like perpendicular to the pipe?

Yeah that I think is more for their Magic bacteria house Media, I have always gone for the most flow I can anyway so we'll see what plays out...

OK shower frame finished...
Now I got to mod the trays for media...
I got some more egg crate/Jap mat/Pumice, lemme see about loading this puppy up...

looking good! question though, how would something like pot scrubbies work in this setup? according to this, pot scrubbers have more surface area...

Thanks Jcar...
Good read, short sweet and very informative...I guess I'm going to get a case of scrubbies...Maybe a west coast group order is in our future...:naughty::naughty::naughty:

OK, after filling my belly with some of that PizzaHut Pasta and breadsticks, I managed to get a little more done...I used a 4" cut-off wheel and took out the bottoms of the trays and put in eggcrate...I should have left a small strap in place because they can bow out and the egg crate may sag.
Easy fix though, I'll just put a zip tie across the bottom and that will keep it from bowing...;)
Pics tomorrow...

A great filter design. Like the idea. So as far as the egg crate getting blow out or sagging just cut some 2" pvc braces. glue them upright in the middle and the outside edges so you have the gapp your looking for. If I have the wrong idea of where you were going with this then My bad.

Keep up the good work.
