Banded leporinus problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And they eat normal feeds, right? I am trying to respond to earlier statements that they are parasitic fin, barbel, and scale eaters, which was stated in general. I can be corrected but at present I don't think so. They eat pellets and cut fish in my hands. They are not parasitic by nature at all. It's just something they may do (occasionally, maybe rare maybe often but not all the time!) to cope with the stress of not being in a shoal / school.

They are algae grazers in the wild so this might hold some fact of feeding off other fish. Much like plecos and flagtails. But I never experienced any of that. I fed pellets, frozen food, lettuce, kitchen sink... really easy fish.

I love these striking fish and wanted one for my 180 com. However, my research give me a lot of concerns so I avoided them like the plague. Shame, but that bit if research saved me, potentially, a whole heap of trouble. Research is king in this hobby.
Same here,

Without trying to sound like a know it all, the leporinus is a shoaling (schooling) fish and they communicate with nudges, nips and occasionally bumps with others. So when it chases or nips, it is seeking reassurance and when this isn't returned it gets more agitated and nervous so it nips again (and again). You need a big tank to keep a few of these happily together.

Some of the other leporinus types are more placid but they all like to school. Three fish is the smallest number so one can see at least 2 others.

I agree to the fact that a single lepo is a crazy lepo. Ever since I bought the second one they are both into each other. The nipping has completely stopped !!! At least when I'm sitting around watching them. Can't buy any more because that would crowd the tank.

Though there was a time (2 years back) when I had crowded tanks with 6 adult Oscars in a 100 gall and so on. Tried to justify it before everyone in mfk.. fought with everyone who tried to advise me.. got my thread deleted by the admin .. (on other forums too) and then eventually learnt through experience that I was wrong..

[", post: 7960146, member: 166465"]The Dorsal fin is lepos weakness.guaranteed it won't dominate anymore. Hah .Cutt it too if the caudal doesn't work.
What in the world are you talking about here? How did you even come up with an idea like that? So, you cut the fins of a fish that nips other's fins to stop that behavior....that's medieval like an "eye for an eye" form of justice. Lol

Anyways. Vibsee Vibsee , glad to hear it's working out!
