Have you ever sat and watched fish interact in a habitat that resembles a natural occuring environment?

 I defenatly agree with you. The interaction, say with there environment or tankmates, makes most of the fun to watch fish.

fish dont need environments stimulation to survive. a fishes primary function is to search for food and eat it.

I still dont get your argument, humans dont NEED a natural enviroment to survive, we survive fine in a jail cell! Our primary function is to eat and breath the same as any other creature on the planet, except we breath air, thats the basics of all we need to survive and any living thing needs to survive, but does just having the bare necessities to survive make us happy? And fish are happier in certain habitats, I have seen it myself.

But of course 'you' seem to know what fish think so you'd know better?

I'm not telling everyone to ditch bare bottom tanks, I'm just saying personally I like to make the fish as comfotable and happy as possible, I dont think bare bottom tanks help with this. :(

if you have the time i would go with a little gravel and plants. i keep fish and tanks bc there awsome to look at. its mt goal to make my tank beautiful looking

Gravel or bare-bottom or combination of both, is all down to individual preference.
I guess, the idea behind the bare-bottom is easy to clean, dirt/waste can be 'spotted' and get ride of easily, so the end result, clean and good water condition which in my opinion, it's the most of important.
Good quality water = Happy and Healthy fish :)

...wasnt directed at you sorry, I am just expressing my opinion and trying not to offend too many bare bottom tank fans, so thought I'd slip that in, it obviously didnt read how I intended it to :(

Wow, didn't mean to spark a debate. That's for all of your heart felt input. I had no idea bare bottoms were such a hot spot (pun intended). I decided to go with the bare bottom on a trial basis. I'm receiving a HUGE piece of bog wood for it on thursday, and with a little help I'll have it cycled by this time next week. This is why I LOVE MFK, so many differing opinions and view points. It makes my job as a fish owner that much easier and enjoyable. Thanks!

I'm trying to start a fight with barebottom tank fans... you guys vs. us aquascaped tank guys and girls. jk, but I do have to say I like the prison analogy. Even though I agree with the idea that a tank should be made to look natural, I love to play devil's advocate. Using the prison analogy, I'd have to say that a human would still suffer in a nicely decorated prison cell that looked like a "natural" human environment. a tank is confinement any way you cut it.

that was fun, but im still ready to take on the bare bottomed supporters.

oops, just looked at the first page of posts and realized that the point that i just made was already made twice... dont i look like an ass.
