Also, has anyone ever consider painting the bottom (outside - not the inside)? Something else I had considered along this line is using some of that sandy looking textured spray paint on the underside of the bottom. Wondering if that will somewhat give the appearance of a substrate???

Some people have tried it. It probably depends on how thick the floor is. I considered painting the floor on the inside, Krylon Fusion would not say that it was fish safe to do so, even though on all fish forums Krylon Fusion is recommended for painting PVCs and stuff going into tanks

It's a low-profile rocky background made by Universal rocks. Check out Albertan's thread.. he has a rocky background on his floor. The backgrounds, trees, rocks are all made by Universal rocks

Bare tank make maintance easy. Over the years I only have bare and black tanks for my fishes. But have learnt to appreciate substract in there. And I will say it does make the tank look better.

Not the best here though.

Do tile-bottom tanks count as bare-bottom tanks??? Technically speaking, tile is a substrate since it is on the bottom.

I've been think about my 1100g and the "monster-scaping" I have been doing. By incorporating large driftwood, river rock, and plastic plants- in addition to a tiled bottom and background , I am working other architectural elements into the stand and canopy. We really need a forum or sub forum dedicated specifically to design aesthetic.

As for fish preference of a substrate or lack thereof, Maybe someone should do a 1000g build with 1/2 gravel on one side and 1/2 bare bottom. See which side the fish prefer....

Hey P PacuMom whats up with your pacu tank build? Any updates?

Should have all the silicone in this week for the rug and the backgrounds. The rug is really rough.. Husband afraid our knuckleheads will scrape and injure themselves on it. I'm scared spitless we might scratch the front panel installing it. Backgrounds were painted by the artist Nov 2014, but needed major corrections like removing and reapplying the clear epoxy coating. Multiple surgeries last year...life just has a way of interfering...right now, we are at the closest we have ever been to proceeding. So far no surgeries for me this year..poor fish desperately need their new tank.
