Barred Midas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
also remember this fish is a juvenile and is not fully mature meaning its aggression will develope with age.... these fish get big and are very aggressive I have raised many midas/ devils and it is very rare to get a mild individual... when young they could work in a community but when they hit 8"+ they start to develope aggression...

not sure its a midas could be a flowerhorn (red) or dovii most midas are dark orange and or lite orange. they also will have white markings on them. well atleast my does. he is 10 in right not and orange and white.
Not exactly a true statement. Amphilophus can have many colormorphs. There are even some that are refered as "Piebalds" because they only partially go through the colormorph of barred to colored.

Might have to. Really nice fish. Anybody with experience on just how aggro they get? I know all fish are different but what are your experiences?
Depends on the fish. I probly have the most layed back Midas on MFK to date. He currently resides in a 125g with Platties, Clown loaches, neon Tetras, Albino Plecos, and Bettas. Not to mention the tank is fully planted. Latest Video is in my avatar.

Yeah, I thought about that. They even said it came in as a Midas but she wasn't 100% sure. I checked around online and found a few pics of Midas with bars and it looks just like this fish. It's shaped like one. Wish I'd grabbed a pic now. One online site even said they(wild) will lose their bars in time
Unfortunantly Petsmart doesn't sell pure Midas or Red Devils. Their a mix and just labeled as what they suspect will sell best in the region. I worked there almost a decade ago, so trust me on that one.

You think it could live with the Jd, GT, firemouth and con in a 300? I was going to put it in the 90 with the others for now but I might put it in my 20 that has all my bio for 300 just for about a month and a half two months tops.
a 300g will be fine for all thats for sure. 90g will be fine for about 6 Months, maybe less. Again, it all depends on the fish. Mine is the exception to the rule. 99.999% of the time a Midas would destroy the setup I have. This one just happened to be that .001% and my experiance with Amphilophus allowed me to recognize that. Now I stick my hand in there it is another story.:irked:

Anyway, welcome to the Amphilophus Addiction. Weather it is a hybrid or pure, you can't go wrong with them.;)

That's what I'm figuring and part of the reason for the 8' tank. I figure eventually my firemouth and con might have to be rehomed back to the 90. I think my Jd will hang just fine and the jag and festae should be should be able to. The GT is questionable, but in a 300 loaded with driftwood for site breaks I might be alright. Only one way to find out though.

I have a 10" guy who lived with 3 midevils in a 90 gallon tank for almost a year.. I took them all in, and the 3 midevils now live in a 240 at a buddy of mines house with some goldfish. The Midas now lives in my 180.

Friend of mine who lives down the street has a 14"+ Midas in with some parrot fry- rays at one point- catfish at another- he's a gentle giant.

I really think it's hard to determine ANY fishes personality based on the species because there are always exceptions to the rules.

I have found that by leaving a nice open tank layout with rock built caves helps break any aggression, as there is no territory to claim.

that is a great size tank for a community.... just be sure to add the midas last so it doesnt claim the whole tank... also if anything the jd will be questionable My old dempseyes had to be rehomed because my gt's beat the crap out of them... good luck with your future tank..

Thanks for the welcome!! I'm amazed by your video. I don't think I'll be trying that with my current stock, but it just goes to show, you never know till you try. My Jd has been eating 1.5-2" tiger barbs as midnight snacks so I guess that fish represents the other side of the equation. Each fish is different and each fish combination is different as well. I figure my odds will go up as dies the size of the tank. But hey, for $8.99 I got a pretty cool fish that will ve able to hold it's own

Thanks! Funny thing is, the first two months I owned my GT I thought I was gonna lose it. Buford, the jack in my avatar was just incouragable and would torment the GT to the point the all it did was hide. I threw my Jd in qt at least 3 times to give everyone a break from the madness and my GT has finally come around and doesn't hide. It still runs when my Jd comes around but not to the point of total submission. My Jd is just a punk and the bigger he gets the worse it seems to get. The more cichlids I added the better things got just because the aggression was more spread out but there is no doubt, it's his tank...

Now once everybody reaches maturity, I have a feeling things might change but the growthrate of my GT is painfully slow. For every inch my jack adds, my GT adds 1/2". If I can get them the same size, Buford is in for a rude awakening because he's just used to being the biggest. This is part of the reason I picked up the Midas. They are roughly the same size now and I figure it'll probably stay that way. Much more level playing field. Now if I can just find a decent sized festae......hmmm

And if I missed anyone, thanks so much for all the insight. Much cooler to learn from actually talking to those who've had experience than reading fish profiles on sites..... first hand is best I'm my book

This fish was raised in a community setting. At petsmart they actually had to remove the 3 Midas from the large display tank they were in because the oscars and bloodparrots were harrasing them. Lol. I thought that was pretty funny. Mine seems alot more aggressive in the qt tank though....
Most likely because the tank is much smaller.
Sweet looking Midas BTW!!!

can't say that for all midas. if they grew up in a community tank, they usually nd up really calm and timid.
I think the only reason they are calmer is because community tanks are usally bigger then a tank in which he is kept alone.

To the op: Great looking barred Midas!
