I'm trying to figure out the same scenario. We were out of power for a few days last winter; I want to find a low draw pump that'll keep filter system alive. I'll probably use deep cycle battery with maintainer & solar charger.
Tetra Whisper Air Pump (Non-UL is the air pump that I possess and must admit that I am greatly admired with its functioning. Been in use for more than a year or so without facing any sort of issues. Though it has a capability of handling up to 100 gallons and I found it to be a star air pump that I can count on. This air pump available at present is not solely inexpensive, but it put up a spectacular practicality too.
I'd well and truly appreciate if you could kindly please share your thoughts.
Honestly I would buy a UPS for computers. and run a smaller pump on the tank through the ups always. power ever goes in and it kicks in, keeping that air pump going.
Simple and easy. will work when you are not around.
Generally they beep as well to let you know power is out. in case of a popped breaker etc.
I also live in South Florida and just before the hurricane, I bought a new air pump and computer battery backup. I got the Tetra Whisper air pump rated for 300 gallon tanks which pulls just under 8 watts. It was more than enough to run 6 sponge filters and 6 extra air stones. I had two of each in my 150 and one in each 40 gallon. I think the air pump was $60 and the battery backup was about the same.
Luckily I was only out of power for a day but this kept me from losing any fish during the storm. I would also recommend a power inverter for your car so you can run the air pump off of your car battery when the backup finally runs out of juice.
