Beginners Guide to Filter Media

Two items I've read about in the ponding area for bio media are:
1) 1" long, 3/4" diameter cut pieces of PVC pipe
2) Shotgun wads
1) 1" long, 3/4" diameter cut pieces of PVC pipe

How does activated carbon stack up? I read it is very porous. I only use sponges in my AC110 but I might change them out slowly with carbon. What do you guys think?

I'm fairly new to cannister filters and I am just using the media that came with it so far. I have a 100 gallon tank and my canister has 3 large trays. The bottom one has a coarse black pad over a bag of green things that look like short snail pellets (but obviously aren't - I have no idea what they are!), the middle one has ceramic rings and the top has a bag of activated carbon with a finer white pad over this. I have been rinsing the pads, ceramic tubes and green things under tap water and replacing the carbon bags when I do the filter clean out.

sounds like its set up more complicated than it has to be...
for more mechanical filtration you can do a mech pre filter in the fist tray like the pre-filter rings fluval makes or some pot scourers (scotch brite,etc) also work well for pre mech when cut to fit the baskets.second basket would be mech like polyfiber or filter pads cut to fit and third chamber would be a high surface area bio media.In that scenario the carbon would be ditched.
if your fish arent that messy and you want to lean more toward bio I would suggest all mechanical filtration media go in the first tray (scotch brite over some polyfiber for example) and both second trays with biomedia.if you really want to run carbon I would put it in the last tray in this scenario.
